The Collega Atelier Series cellos are a new product line for us at Sam's Strings. The concept is to invite young, talented makers to explore new ideas and concepts of tonal and artistic creation on unfinished European instruments made to our specification. The result is a creative melding of new and old, providing the luthier a chance to use their experience and creativity to produce unique examples reminiscent of fine old master's instruments at a reasonable price to the customer.
This cello is a perfect example of this product, finished by American cello maker, Kile Hill. The model we sent to him was that of Guadagnini, whose cellos are played in major symphonies across the world. What makes this particular pattern unique is that while it has the width of some of the larger model instruments, it has a petite length, ending up with a string length of 673mm, nearly 2 full centimeters less than a than that of a typical full size cello's string length.
This particular cello has a very durable finish, with extremely fine and interesting antique work done by Kile. Tonally, it has a brilliant and open sound, sure to please! Come give it a try today!
